HOW TO PACK FOR YOUR TRIP TO LONDON

England is a fairy tale world all its own, home to Shakespeare, King Arthur and Round Table lore, and centuries of scandalous monarchs. But, while you're taking in all the castles, palaces and ancient ruins for which England is known so well just make sure you come packed ready for its equally infamous weather.

Steps:

  1. Prepare for any kind of weather. England's weather, like much of Western Europe, is fickle and can change within minutes. Be ready for any contingency.
  2. Think comfort. You will want to be dressed comfortably for those long days of taking in all the sights. Also, stick with wrinkle-free fabrics so that you won't have to worry about ironing.
  3. Select clothing that you can layer and mix and match. This will cut down on the quantity of clothing you have to take and allow you to be prepared for ever-changing and unpredictable weather conditions.
  4. Pack a raincoat and umbrella. England is notorious for its rainy weather, and sightseeing or shopping while wet leaves much to be desired.
  5. Take a coat, hat, scarf and gloves. During summer months, you may get away with not using these items at all. You will not want to be left out in the cold, though, on those bitter British fall, winter and spring days, so take a medium or heavy coat for a trip during those months.
  6. Include sweaters or sweatshirts. Because England's weather is often quite chilly, you will probably want to wear or carry a sweater with you when you go out for the day, even in the summer.
  7. Choose sturdy shoes that you can tolerate walking in for hours at a time. Even taking advantage of the Underground, other public transportation or taxis, you can count on doing a lot of walking. Make sure your shoes are up to the challenge.
  8. Pack appropriate evening attire for whisking off to the theater or having an intimate dinner overlooking the River Thames.

Concerning England’s climate, it is rather temperate, normally not going much below zero even in the depths of winter, and never much above 25 degrees centigrade in summer. Most of the time it is between 10 and 20 degrees centigrade during the day.
Annual mean temperature: London 9.7C
Annual mean rainfall: London 753mm
